Introducing Phonics to Your Child
Phonics is a method of a child to read by correlating sounds with letters. Phonics is part of the process of your child learning to read.
Today I am sharing how we are working on those first few steps towards reading with our daughter. We are teaching Emmy to not only identify each letter of the alphabet, but focusing on the sounds each letter makes. Simply knowing “that’s an A” is only half of the equation; the sounds are just as important!
Each day we focus on a new letter. We start by sitting together and introducing the letter.
We talk about how that letter looks in both upper case and lower case. I will write each of them and we talk about the shapes that make up the letter (ex: an upper case E has one straight line then 3 small straight lines that are sideways”).
We talk about words that start with the letter and focus on that beginning sound (“Feather starts with the letter F…Do you hear the ‘ffff’ sounds? Let’s make it together”).
We then work on our Letter of the Day worksheet. As with most of our worksheets we do, I read the instructions to Emmy and then let her have her space to complete it on her own. There were mistakes, as expected when learning something new, but we continue to use positive language when working through these new letters.
In addition to our “Letter of the Day” worksheet, we are also working with Alphabet Flashcards, which are also included in this bundle.
While the worksheets are great, I have to admit that the highlight of the day is usually our letter inspired craft! You can see what we have done so far and what we plan to do in this blog post.
Working on letter recognition and letter sounds has become part of our every day, even after the worksheets and crafts are complete.
If we are sitting down for snack time and Emmy requests a banana, we will talk about how banana starts with the sound “bb” and that’s our letter of the day. It may sound cheesy, but Emmy really seems to enjoy the learning and the fun we are creating with it.
