Rainbow Rice- Simple inexpensive sensory play
Don’t get me wrong, I am all about sensory play and encouraging our little ones to learn and grow, but I need set up to be SUPER SIMPLE (two under two over here, so obviously the easier the better!)
So when I first saw Rainbow Rice I thought it looked a little to intense for me. That surely took at least half an hour to make. Right? NOPE!I was able to make this entire activity in under 10 minutes (minus drying time, of course!)
I have two recipes I have tested for rainbow rice, both of which have turned out great! So based on what materials you have on hand, you can select either.
Rainbow Rice with Food Coloring and Vinegar
- 2 Cups of uncooked white Rice (I bought a 5 lb bag for less than $3 from our local grocery store!)
- 1 tsp of vinegar
- 5-7 drops of liquid food coloring of choice
Rainbow Rice with Watercolors
The second option is to swap our your food coloring and vinegar for water colors. I buy this brand from Micheals. I like to start with 1 cup of rice and 5-6 drops of water color. I add water color as needed but always start with a smaller amount.
With which ever coloring option you choose, simply add all ingredients to a gallon size ziplock and begin mixing.
I let the Ziplocs sit overnight in order for everything to dry properly. By morning the colors were dry and ready to play with!
