Taste Safe Sensory Play: Chocolate Cloud Dough
Sensory play is so beneficial for developing minds. It promotes cognitive development, language skills, fine motor skills and so much more.
Studies have shown that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brains pathway which will lead to your child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks.
This activity is labeled as “taste safe”, meaning if your child places their hand in their mouth and has a little taste, there is no need to panic. However, this is not an edible activity. Do not encourage your child do eat it or allow them to ingest large quantities. This activity requires adult supervision at all times.
It is very important that flour is heated before it is used in a “taste safe” manor. Raw flour is not safe to be consumed unless it is thourouly heated to kill off any potential bacteria. Here’s how you can do this:
Chocolate Cloud Dough Recipe
- 3 cups flour (heated prior to kill bacteria)
- 1 cup cocoa
- 1/2 coconut oil (melted to liquid state, just a few seconds in the microwave will do the trick)
Have your sensory bin ready! In a medium bowl, mix together the flour and cocoa until well blended. I personally like to add my flour/cocoa mix to my sensory bin then add the coconut oil It gives me more room to mix it around. However if you would like to add it to your mixing bowl then transfer to sensory bin, that would work too.
This is a pretty simple recipe and can be tough to mess up! Either mixing option works.
If you do not have coconut oil on hand, vegetable oil is a perfect substitute.
Feel free to double the recipe for more or cut it in half if you would like less.
This can be stored in an air tight container for later play.
