The Story of St. Patrick’s Day and Its Fun Traditions
Anytime we are doing holiday related crafts and activities in our home, I always try to include the history an/or reason behind the celebrated day. In case you’d like to do the same with your little one, here’s a kid friendly version on the history behind St. Patrick’s Day and the traditions.
Every year on March 17th, people around the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! But do you know why? Let’s take a journey back in time to learn about the history of this special holiday and the fun traditions that come with it.
Who Was St. Patrick?
A long, long time ago, there was a boy named Patrick who lived in Britain. When he was young, he was taken to Ireland, where he worked as a shepherd. Patrick was very brave, and after several years, he escaped and returned home. But later, he decided to go back to Ireland to teach people about kindness and faith. Over time, people loved and respected him for the good things he did, and he became known as St. Patrick.
Why Do We Wear Green?
St. Patrick’s Day is all about the color green! One reason is because Ireland, where St. Patrick lived, is called the “Emerald Isle” because of its beautiful green fields. Another reason is the legend of the shamrock, a tiny green plant with three leaves. St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain important lessons, and it became a symbol of the holiday.
What’s the Deal with Leprechauns?
Leprechauns are tiny, mischievous fairies from Irish stories. They love to play tricks and hide pots of gold at the end of rainbows! That’s why you might see leprechaun decorations and gold coins during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
How Do We Celebrate?
People celebrate by wearing green, watching parades, and eating yummy Irish food. Some even try to catch a leprechaun (but they’re very sneaky)!
So, on St. Patrick’s Day, put on something green, look out for leprechauns, and have lots of fun doing the crafts and activities we’ve shared below!
